Can a bad RAM slot be fixed?

One of the RAM slots in my laptop is dead. It only recognizes one of my sticks. I tried another set of RAM and it still does the same thing. I tried updating the BIOS, still nothing. It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 from around 2006. Can it be fixed? I really can't afford another laptop at the moment.
