Why is it that when i enter a contact, it repeats itself?

my contacts started randomly repeating itself so i deleted them all, but the contact slots were still there, just empty. So when i started re-entering the contacts, it said that the contact was already added, but added it anyway, and it showed up double again! its so annoying how can i return it to how it originally was?
